Wikipedia tells us the concept of Pay it Forward has been around since 317 B.C.–and rediscovered by Benjamin Franklin in 1784–but it was the 1999 book of the same title by Catharine Ryan Hyde–made into this movie the following year with Kevin spacey, Helen Hunt and Haley Joel Osment–that popularized the phrase.
And today is the big day: April 24, 2014.
The Pay it Forward foundation named the last Thursday in April–don’t ask, I don’t know how they chose the date!–to celebrate Pay it Forward each year. The concept is that kind human beings the world over chose three random acts of kindness to pay forward to a complete stranger. The web site Pay it Forward Day says that in 2013, people from 65 countries participated in the event, and this year their goal is to inspire three million acts of kindness around the world.
Pay it Forward not only thrives in San Miguel de Allende, it occurs year round. For instance, at Coldwell Banker SMART, Your Dream Team of Greg & Ivy support the concept with every closing, donating ten percent of their commission earnings to their client’s favorite charity as a way of paying it forward.
So what will YOU do today for Pay it Forward Day? This is Mexico: there are innumerable worthy recipients of your random act of kindness–just look around and surprise someone today!
